Andrea Dovizioso felt the fight for fourth place at the San Marino MotoGP could have been possible had he not got stuck behind Red Bull KTM’s Pol Espargaro but concedes he continued to suffer in the low grip conditions for Ducati. The Italian rider has slipped to 93 points behind MotoGP world championship leader Marc Marquez following the Repsol Honda rider’s victory at Misano with the Ducati rider finishing down in sixth place – his worst classified finish of the season.Having suffered throughout the Misano race weekend in low grip conditions, robbing Ducati of one of its biggest strengths in acceleration out of corners, Dovizioso felt sixth place could have been improved on if he caught the fight between Rossi and Morbidelli.Dovizioso lost key time behind Espargaro on the KTM at the start of Lap 9 but had already conceded too much ground to the Yamaha duo in front of him.“It was a difficult race, as we had expected. We all suffered because of the very little grip, especially at the front, and it was really difficult to push hard,” Dovizioso said. “Pity about the sixth place, because when I managed to catch Rossi and Morbidelli, who were fighting for fourth, there weren’t the right conditions to try and attack without making mistakes.“However, I’m pleased with the work we’ve done this weekend, because on Friday our gap was a really big one and we managed to improve the situation for the race a lot.”With a maximum of 150 points left to score across the final six rounds, Dovizioso will need a monumental swing in his favour to overhaul Marquez’s strong points advantage in the riders’ standings.
