Lewis Hamilton and the Mercedes Formula 1 team have both received nominations for the 2019 Laureus World Sports Awards following their successes last year.

Hamilton claimed his fifth F1 world title in 2018, becoming only the third driver in the sport’s history to hit the landmark, while Mercedes claimed its own fifth constructors’ championship, continuing a winning streak that dates back to 2014.

Both parties have been regular nominees for the Laureus Awards, which are held each spring, and have once again received recognition through nominations for the 2019 edition.

Hamilton has been nominated for the World Sportsman of the Year Award, and will be gunning to win the title for the first time against tennis grand slam winner Novak Djokovic, basketball star Lebron James, as well as two footballers: FIFA World Cup winner Kylian Mbappe and Ballon d’Or winner Luca Modric.

Mercedes will be looking to defend its World Team of the Year award from 2018, going up against France’s FIFA World Cup squad, the European Ryder Cup team in golf, basketball’s Golden State Warriors, the Norwegian Winter Olympics team, and Real Madrid, which won football’s UEFA Champions League for a third successive year in 2018.
