Lewis Hamilton says Mercedes is not getting ahead of itself despite becoming the first team in 27 years to record three one-two finishes at the start of a Formula 1 season.

Hamilton took a comfortable victory in Sunday’s Chinese Grand Prix ahead of teammate Valtteri Bottas as Ferrari struggled to challenge Mercedes’ dominance at the front of the pack.

The result saw Mercedes become the first team since Williams in 1992 to start the season with three one-two finishes, scoring 130 of a possible 132 points so far in 2019.

However, Hamilton stressed after his victory that the team was not getting complacent or comfortable with the championship outlook, believing the threat from Ferrari to remain as strong as ever.

“I think as a team, we’re not going to get ahead of ourselves, and we’re naturally going to continue to get our heads down and keep working,” Hamilton said.

“We’ve got another close battle on our hands. The Red Bulls, I don’t know where they were today or this weekend, but I know the Ferraris are right there. I think we’ve got races that are coming up that could potentially suit them more, who knows.

“We didn’t expect to have the deficit in Melbourne, and we didn’t expect to have the deficit in the last race, and we didn’t expect this weekend to have a bit of an advantage that we have here. It’s still up in the air.

“I think ultimately as a team we’ve performed collectively together, we’ve really delivered on the weekends, and we’ve just got to continue to do so.”

Mercedes arrived in China anticipating Ferrari to be the team to beat given its straight-line speed advantage, but managed to overhaul the deficit through the corners at the Shanghai International Circuit.

“I’ve not really looked into detail why they weren’t as quick,” Hamilton said of Ferrari.

“They were quick on the straights, they were gaining something like four-tenths on the straights overall, but they were losing in the corners.

“I think it’ll be interesting to see how long they keep that strategy. At some places, it will be great, like probably the next race is going to be really good for them in that respect. But then in others, maybe not so much.”
