Jorge Viegas has been elected as FIM President to take over from Vito Ippolito following the latest FIM Annual General Assembly in Andorra.

Viegas will step up from his former FIM Vice President role to replace the outgoing Ippolito with the Portuguese a former 250cc Grand Prix rider calling the role “a lifelong achievement”.

After his racing career ended Viegas worked as a journalist before helping found the Portuguese Foundation in 1990 and also went on to become President of Estoril Circuit.

Viegas has already served a number of roles within the FIM, starting as a Member and President of the FIM Promotion Commission in 1992 before being appointed FIM Vice President between 1996 and 2014.

“I am truly honoured to be elected to the position of FIM President,” Viegas said. “It is a lifelong achievement for me to see my passion for motorcycling develop into a role that can allow me to make a positive impact on the sport.

“I have spent many years working for and with the FIM and I am looking forward to a bright future together.

“We took very important and courageous decisions in our first Board of Directors. We are going in the right direction, putting the National Federations, the Continental Unions and the Commissions in the centre of the decisions.”

Viegas will also become the acting CEO of the FIM Commissions Conference from February 2019.
