Jorge Lorenzo is optimistic he can return to his performance level displayed at the Japanese round in Malaysia this weekend after enduring a nightmare outing at Phillip Island.After making startling admissions when he “struggled in every way” in the windy and cold conditions at the iconic Australia track, Lorenzo ended the race in 16th place and last of the finishers over one minute behind race-winner and Repsol Honda team-mate Marc Marquez.It capped a horrid race weekend for the five-time world champion who had to deny retirement rumours on Thursday before again dismissing reports of fractions within his Repsol Honda crew after the race on Sunday.With Lorenzo hoping the warmer climes of Malaysia and the Sepang circuit layout will boost his efforts to make the Phillip Island weekend a blip on his current trend of performances, the Spanish rider will bid to regain confidence and an upturn in results having not scored a single point since Misano.“Sepang is a track where I have had good success in the past,” Lorenzo said, having taken seven podium finishes in Malaysia in his premier class career.“Earlier this year I was not able to test in Sepang because of my training injury, but my team were there testing so already we have some ideas of what to do with the bike.“Compared to Australia, the circuit in Malaysia should suit me more and I think we will be able to get back to where we were in Motegi. We will see how the weekend progresses there.”Lorenzo has also been unable to help Repsol Honda’s bid to seal the final leg of its MotoGP Triple Crown in 2019, with the team trailing Ducati by just one point at the top of the standings with two rounds to go.
