Marc Marquez fears Michelin’s front tyre compounds could put his Repsol Honda squad at a disadvantage struggling with stability at Mugello.

The reigning MotoGP world champion comes into the Italian round off the back of three consecutive race wins and having produced reported lap record pace at the recent Mugello test.

But Marquez fears the higher temperatures this weekend will plague his progress coupled with the front tyre options being too soft to find a comfortable set-up.

The Repsol Honda rider suffered a small lowside at Turn 4 midway through FP2, losing the front tyre halfway through the long left-hander, but was content having ended the afternoon session third fastest and within half a second of pace-setter Andrea Iannone for Suzuki.

“Mugello is a track where we usually struggle, but we’re right there in third place,” Marquez said. “Our pace isn’t bad either so we will see tomorrow if we’re able to improve further.

“Honestly, we were expecting to struggle a bit with the front tyre if temperatures were higher compared to the test, as was the case today, because the hardest compound is still a bit too soft for us. That said, I think we still have some margin for improvement.

“Besides, generally speaking, we’ve worked well and have improved our lap time quite a bit from the morning. I’d like to add that I hope Michele [Pirro] gets well and comes back soon.”

Marquez is also running with a new rear seat component on his Honda RC213V but has played down the performance gains from the part.

“It is a new seat and looks a bit different but for the aerodynamics it is not a big improvement,” he said. “Maybe tomorrow I will compare back-to-back but we tried in Montmelo and it was not different.”
