Sam Lowes made an impressive start to the new Triumph Moto2 era with the second fastest lap time on his return to Gresini and Kalex, at the Jerez test.

The Englishman, looking to turn the page on a disappointing 2018 season with a KTM chassis, was 0.268s behind test leader Luca Marini (VR46 Kalex) by the conclusion of the three days.

As well as the new 765cc engine, which replaces the 600cc Honda powerplants, a Magneti Marelli ECU is also being introduced for 2019.

“It’s been a real positive test because we could work on many things. The first, of course, was to get used to the new engine and the new bike,” said Lowes.

“I immediately felt good with all the team and the new engine is very nice, the character is completely different to the Honda so you have to ride the bike in different way, but we are working on it.

“We have a precise plan on what to work on for the next test to improve the bike. Second overall and with good feelings. It was a very positive test and a big thumbs up for the engine. It’s going to be an interesting season with nice races!”

The Kalex was the chassis to beat at the debut Triumph test, filling eleven of the top twelve places.

The leading Speed Up was former Gresini rider Jorge Navarro in fifth, and top KTM Brad Binder in 13th.
