Following the fallout over the Misano Moto2 last-lap clash between Fabio Di Giannantonio and Augusto Fernandez, MotoGP has moved to clarify rules and procedures over track limit infringements which occur on the final lap of a race.Fernandez appeared to put both his tyres off track at Turn 11 on the final lap of the Misano Moto2 race which gained him extra momentum to produce a block pass on Di Giannantonio at Turn 14 to overtake his rival and duly claim victory. The incident was automatically placed under investigation by the MotoGP Stewards but no further action was taken meaning Fernandez retained victory. But the flashpoint continued into this weekend’s Aragon round with Di Giannantonio’s Speed Up squad launching an appeal against the Stewards’ decision – only to see that move rejected due to no new evidence to overturn the original call. After reviewing the incident with the Safety Commission, MotoGP officials have clarified rules over track limits on the final lap of a race. From the Aragon round, any last lap track limit issue which directly affects a race result will be reviewed and any rider who exceeds track limits must show they have been disadvantaged by it – rather than being judged to have gained an unfair advantage. As per sporting regulations, all decisions will rest with the MotoGP Stewards’ panel who will be able to penalise riders with a change of position or time penalty.“At the Gran Premio Michelin de Aragon and following consultation with the Safety Commission, it has been decided to update the protocol for track limit infractions that occur on the last lap of a race,” a MotoGP statement confirmed.“From now on, an infraction on the last lap that has affected a race result must indicate that the rider in question was disadvantaged by exceeding track limits.“If the Stewards deem there is no clear disadvantage, the rider will be penalised with a change of position or a time penalty. This is to ensure that any rider exceeding track limits on the final lap must be in a worse position than the rider or riders with whom they are directly competing for a finish position.“Decisions regarding track limits are the sole responsibility of the FIM MotoGP Stewards Panel and are final, with infractions confirmed by video. There is no possibility of protest or appeal.””4
