McLaren engineering director Pat Fry is set to leave the Formula 1 team.Having previously worked at the Woking squad from 1993 to 2010, Fry rejoined the team late last year to help spearhead the development of McLaren’s 2019 challenger ahead of James Key’s anticipated arrival from Toro Rosso.Fry, who was heavily involved in the design of the MCL34 and worked closely with performance director Andrea Stella, is expected to be placed on gardening leave following his departure.When approached to comment on the matter by , a McLaren spokesperson said the team will “never comment on personnel matters” but did not deny that Fry is leaving.One clear option for Fry, who also spent a brief spell at Manor prior to his re-hiring at McLaren, could be with Williams.The British squad is currently anchored to the bottom of the constructors’ championship and recently confirmed Paddy Lowe’s exit from the team, leaving Williams with no senior technical figure.Deputy team principal Claire Williams said in Austria last weekend that Williams will consider a replacement plan now that Lowe has officially left.
