Fabio Quartararo says his MotoGP education continues at a rapid rate thanks to a podium at what he anticipated to be his toughest round on the calendar at the Red Bull Ring. The Petronas Yamaha rider kept clear of the charging trio of Valentino Rossi, Maverick Vinales and Alex Rins to take the final podium spot behind Andrea Dovizioso and Marc Marquez who battled for victory at the Austrian round.Despite charging into a surprise early lead after Dovizioso and Marquez held each other up on the opening lap, Quartararo feels he made key breakthroughs over tyre management in MotoGP which made the third podium of his rookie campaign in the premier class the sweetest so far.“This one is really special because we arrived here and said this track would be the toughest for us,” Quartararo said. “We knew the bike, which has a lot of positive points, but it is true in the top speed we are struggling. So to really fight for the podium in this race was incredible.“I learnt many things today about how to manage the tyre and I think today more than the podium we learnt a lot and for the future we can have this situation again and manage it well.”Quartararo also felt battling and keeping in touch with the leading duo for the majority of the race enriched his own experience and information about both the strong and weak points his Yamaha has compared to its Ducati and Honda rivals.“I see where our strong points are and it is good that I could manage to stay with them for a few laps but of course we see in one moment when Marc was first he increased the pace and I couldn’t stay with them,” he said.“But it is true that the laps that I stayed with them I could see the way they ride and we could see that mainly the Honda and Ducati are different kind of riding styles.“So we also learnt this because we know that to overtake them it is really difficult.”Quartararo has surged up to seventh place in the MotoGP riders’ standings and is just 11 points off leading Yamaha rider Rossi who holds fifth place in the championship.
