The car that took Michael Schumacher to the 2002 Formula 1 world championship will go up for auction at this year’s season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.Schumacher claimed his fifth F1 drivers’ world title in the Ferrari F2002, which will go under the hammer at the 2019 season-finale at the Yas Marina Circuit on November 30.Chassis No.219 scored three grands prix victories in 2002, including the German’s controversial team-orders win in Austria, and Magny-Cours, the latter of which sealed the title for Schumacher with six rounds remaining.Proceeds made by the auction of the F2002 will go towards the Keep Fighting Foundation – a charity set up by Schumacher’s family following his skiing accident in 2013.A number of F1 cars will be up for sale during RM Sotheby’s auction, including a restored 1990 F40 signed by current Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel.Fans and registered bidders will be able to watch the F1 cars be paraded down the Yas Marina start-finish straight and driven along the pitlane prior to the auction getting underway.“The Michael Schumacher F2002, chassis no. 219, is truly special; it represents one of the last Rory Byrne-designed, V10 era cars and was like a guided missile in acquiring wins on route to a Championship won with sheer racing dominance,” said RM Sotheby car specialist Oliver Camelin.“As a result, it remains as one of the most dominant Formula 1 racing cars in history and is fittingly joined by the ultimate in Ferrari supercars in the virtually as-new Ferrari F40.“As we proceed with considering consignments for the Abu Dhabi auction we look forward to an exciting year in partnership with Formula 1 that will include an RM Sotheby’s presence at some of the most notable circuits around the world.”
