Despite being one of the few Formula 1 drivers with a recent record at Paul Ricard, Lance Stroll says the home of the French Grand Prix isn’t a circuit he’s not relishing a return to.

The Williams driver competed at Paul Ricard just two years ago during his final FIA European Formula 3 campaign when the French track hosted the season-opener.

Stroll claimed pole position, victory and the fastest lap in the 2016 opening race, before retiring from race two and taking fifth place in race three, but given the French GP’s 10-year absence from the F1 calendar he will return to the track with useful racing experience compared to many of his rivals.

But despite his fond memories at the circuit Stroll says he’s not a fan of the Paul Ricard layout due to the extensive tarmac run off areas.

“I know the Paul Ricard track from when I drove in Formula 3. I had a good time there and won a race, but I have to be honest because I can’t say I like it,” Stroll said.

“It is just run offs everywhere and I am not a big fan. However, it is always interesting to go back to somewhere I have raced before and see what it is like in a Formula 1 car.”

Stroll will hope the new circuit on the F1 will throw up some unknowns which Williams can profit from after its tough start to 2018 with just a single points finish in the opening seven rounds – Stroll’s eighth place at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
