The FIA has confirmed both Haas Formula 1 drivers Kevin Magnussen and Romain Grosjean will have ten-second time penalties applied to each of their respective race times for a breach of the FIA Sporting Regulations.Shortly after the race, it was announced that Haas had been called to the stewards for an “alleged breach of Article 27.1 of the FIA Formula 1 Sporting Regulations, driver aids during formation lap.”The aforementioned regulation states: “The driver must drive the car alone and unaided.”Have you seen F1TV – Click here to get 25% offThe penalties mean Magnussen drops from ninth to tenth – promoting the McLaren of Carlos Sainz by one position, and Grosjean to 16th from 15th.The breach of regulation appears to be when both drivers returned to the pits at the end of the formation lap to switch to slick tyres having received instructions to do so from the pit wall.A statement from the stewards found Haas guilty of the following: “Having considered the matter extensively, the stewards determined that the team instructed the driver to pit.”The team could not prove that one of the exemptions made under paragraph A. 2. a) to g) of the Technical Directive 011-17 was applicable. Therefore, the stewards consider there is a breach of Art. 27.1 of the Sporting Regulations, that the driver must drive the car alone and unaided.”It still means Haas picked up its first point of the season, putting it ahead of Williams for ninth place in the constructors’ championship.Team boss Guenther Steiner praised the team’s strategic call to pit his cars before the start of the race.”It’s fantastic, as at the moment we’re not in a position to do this under normal circumstances. The call at the beginning of the race was the decision which made this happen, the guys then just kept it up. Kevin did a fantastic job in the race, Romain just had a few issues with the tyres. “Thanks to the whole team for putting in the hard work and keeping on pushing – they never gave up; we never give up.”
