After a Saturday dominated by Francesco Bagnaia and Ducati, Takaaki Nakagami and Honda moved to the top during morning warm-up for the 2022 Spanish Grand Prix at Jerez.

Nakagami, who has qualified seventh at one of his most successful MotoGP tracks, finished the 20-minute session 0.227s ahead of Fabio Quartararo’s Yamaha.

Bagnaia, looking to jump-start a frustrating season with at least a podium this afternoon having beaten Quartararo to pole by almost half a second, didn’t set a lap time for the first half of the session before climbing to a late third ahead of Pramac team-mates Jorge Martin and Johann Zarco.

Marc Marquez, who insists 5th to 10th is a realistic target for this afternoon after being towed to fifth in qualifying, completed the top six for Repsol Honda.

The hard front and medium rear are the clear favourites as far as tyres for the race, but the cooler conditions saw medium fronts used for warm-up (and some soft rears).

Tech3 KTM’s Raul Fernandez, ruled out of last Sunday’s Portimao round due to a right-hand injury in qualifying, has also been declared unfit for Jerez.

Factory test riders Stefan Bradl (Honda) and Lorenzo Savadori (Aprilia) are making wild-card card appearances this weekend, ahead of Monday’s official test.

After third place for Aleix Espargaro in Portimao, one more podium finish for the RS-GP will mean Aprilia lose technical concessions.

Quartararo looked set for a comfortable victory at Jerez last season, only to fade from the lead with arm pump problems (for which he then underwent surgery) handing Ducati a one-two with Jack Miller and Francesco Bagnaia.

Franco Morbidelli completed the podium in third last year, taking what would be the final rostrum for Petronas Yamaha SRT.
