Tony Arbolino takes his first Moto2 victory at the Grand Prix of the Americas, after Celestino Vietti and then Aron Canet ed out of the race lead.
Ai Ogura and Jake Dixon completed the podium, the Englishman fighting back tears as he finally celebrated his first grand prix rostrum.
Mandalika winner Somkiat Chantra – who hit the back of Sam Lowes on the first lap and could well face a penalty for Portimao – plus star rookies Fermin Aldeguer and Pedro Acosta were also among the long DNF list.
Debut pole starter Cameron Beaubier dropped down the order after some early moments, then recovered and looked set to take a career-best fourth in front of his home fans. But there was late heartbreak, with Beaubier falling while under pressure from Marcel Schrotter on the final lap.
Schrotter had been lucky to stay onboard when he bumped into Albert Arenas, who in-turn forced Aldeguer wide, at turn one of the race.
