Despite taking his first point in MotoGP, Remy Gardner claims he was expecting more speed from his Tech 3 KTM. The Australian, who qualified third best of the rookies during Saturday’s Q1 session, managed to pip Darryn Binder to 15th by just -0.012s, a result that puts him top of the rookies since none of the other four scored points. While it’s no surprise to see all the 2022 rookies fighting towards the back given pre-season testing suggested this was likely, at least during the first couple of races, Gardner is already thinking much higher than his P15 finish after Brad Binder claimed a podium for the Austrian manufacturer. Gardner added: “Although it is not where we want to be, it is nice to be getting a MotoGP point. I felt good and fast during the first half of the race. Related Fernandez: Binder podium ‘really important to me, means the bike can perform’ Dovizioso: ‘Speed still not good, can’t be happy’! Binder ‘enjoyed’ rookie fight”However, I was expecting a bit more speed from the bike and found myself struggling to overtake during the first laps.”Brad Binder did a podium today, so we need to look at his data and what he did in order to help us improve and go faster. It is a great result. “Anyway, we finished the race today and we will take experience from it when heading to Mandalika.”Related WithU RNF Yamaha confirm new MotoGP sponsor BP Healthcare Fernandez ‘dreamt about this day’, Gardner ‘top rookie reasonable target’Holding Gardner back somewhat was the presence of Brad’s brother Darryn who was in front of him for much of the race. Had he got through much earlier on, last season’s Moto2 world champion felt catching Andrea Dovizioso and even Maverick Vinales – eventually finished 19 seconds behind the latter – was a possibility. “4”At one point, I felt capable of catching Maverick Viñales and Andrea Dovizioso, but I had Darren Binder in front of me and I could not get past him. “He is coming from the Moto3 class, so he was all over the place, coming back on line without looking, he was wide. It was a disaster and I lost the group. I am hoping to catch up with him to discuss this.”
