Iannone: Suzuki has to be realistic at Mugello

Andrea Iannone feels his Suzuki squad can demonstrate it huge gains at Mugello compared to last year but accepts the team may struggle to fight its front-runners at his home event, while speculation about his future continues to swirl.

The Italian riders is reportedly set to be out of a ride at Suzuki with the Japanese manufacturer strongly linked to a deal with Joan Mir from 2019 having also already re-signed Alex Rins for next season.

Iannone, who has been rumoured with a move to Aprilia for next year, has enjoyed a upturn in results with back-to-back podiums in the United States and Spain before his momentum was stalled by a first lap at the French round last time out.

Looking to make amends in front of his home crowd, Iannone is relishing his chance to impress at Mugello having taken pole position with Ducati in 2015 followed by second place that year plus third place in 2016.

“I’m happy to say that we arrive in Italy in a better situation compared to last year, our competitiveness is higher, but at the same time we have to be realistic knowing that the general level of the championship has risen a lot,” Iannone said. “We have to keep the pace.

“We did some testing here three weeks ago and we had good outcomes, but as well we have found some things that can and must be improved for an even better performance.

“Italy will not be easy at all, but I like the track a lot and I have already won here many times in the past, plus we will have the affection of our fans who will further add to our performance.”
