Somkiat Chantra has become the first Thai rider to win a motorcycle grand prix with a dominant victory in the 2022 Indonesian Moto2 Grand Prix at Mandalika.

The race was reduced to 16 instead of 25 laps due to ‘track conditions’, with the excessively high temperatures later cited (presumably meaning track damage), while occasional spots of rain began falling on the grid.

The start took place as planned, with Chantra snatching the early lead from Sam Lowes and debut pole qualifier Jake Dixon.

Dixon then fell moments after passing Lowes for second, with Qatar winer Celestino Vietti and Aron Canet later demoting Lowes from the rostrum and setting their sights on Chantra.

But the Honda Team Asia rider responded, taking his historic first grand prix win (and first top-four result) in his fourth season of world championship competition.

Rookie Pedro Acosta, who had to serve a Long Lap penalty during the race for falling under waved yellow flags on Friday, dropped from seventh to 15th before recovering to ninth.
