'Investigations underway' after huge Jerez MotoE fire, test cancelled

Following the opening day of the first 2019 MotoE test, a major fire broke out in the Jerez paddock, which has forced the remainder of the test to be cancelled.

An Energica spokesman told that the official cause is not yet known and that ‘investigations are underway’.

Images show huge flames engulfing the ‘tent’ that houses the MotoE machines, putting today’s test action is in doubt, although an official decision is yet to be issued.

‘We are coordinating with all the parties involved and a release will be communicated when possible,’ the spokesman added.

An update from MotoGP officials has confirmed the new MotoE paddock has been destroyed, including the series’ equipment, after a fire started at 00:15 on March 14. Nobody was injured in the blaze, while an investigation is currently underway into the cause of the fire and potential changes to the calendar.

Eric Granado was fastest on day one, beating the best November MotoE time by more than one-second.

The new electric grand prix class is due to hold its first race event at the same circuit during the Spanish MotoGP weekend on  May 3-5.
