Bradley Smith was following Jorge Lorenzo when the Ducati rider suffered his huge highside in Friday afternoon practice at Buriram, Thailand.

On-board footage appeared to suggest Lorenzo experienced some kind of technical problem, with his engine appearing to cut out just before the rear slid-out and threw the triple MotoGP champion into the air under braking at Turn 3.

While picking his words carefully, Smith admitted it was a ‘strange’ incident and feels the fluid later found on the track was a result of Lorenzo’s fall – not the cause of it.

“Obviously I don’t really know what happened. It seemed to be quite strange where it happened and what happened,” said the KTM rider, who finished the day in 14th.

“I think Ducati will know more than me, but it didn’t look pretty and I don’t think that was nice to there.

“I think the liquid on the track was when after it ed the bike started to flip, but up until that point I don’t think there was any problem [with the track].”

Lorenzo – already riding with foot injuries from Aragon – fortunately, escaped any fractures, but is undergoing further scans and it is unclear if he will be on track tomorrow.
