Reigning MotoGP champion Marc Marquez will require winter shoulder surgery, for the second year in a row.On the final day of 2019 testing at Jerez it emerged that yesterday’s fall, in which the Repsol Honda star suffered a partial dislocation of his right shoulder, was not the first such injury. It’s now been revealed that Marquez ‘had issues’ with the same shoulder ‘before Motegi’ and then again when he was thrown over the handlebars while trying to follow Fabio Quartararo during qualifying for the Malaysian MotoGP, earlier this month.Although Marquez was able to continue testing at Jerez on Monday and went on to set the fastest Tuesday lap time before rain arrived, the fact he had suffered another partial dislocation – during what the #93 called a ‘very slow’ fall – further raised alarm bells.A team statement explained that Marquez will undergo surgery tomorrow (November 27) at the Hospital Universitari Dexeus-Quiron in Barcelona to avoid the right shoulder deteriorating further. The operation will be similar to the one performed on his left shoulder at the end of 2018.“This winter I would have liked to have a nice holiday and enjoy a bit of quiet time after a great 2019 – but it is time to have surgery on the right shoulder,” Marquez said.”As everyone knows, last winter was very tough for me with the operation on the left shoulder, which was very, very damaged. I want to avoid the situation where my right shoulder is in this condition in the future so I spoke a lot with the doctors to see what our options were.”Before Motegi I had some issues with the shoulder and then after the in Malaysia I had a subluxation [partial dislocation]. Here at the test I had another subluxation after the , so we decided with the doctors that it was best to have the surgery to avoid the situation we had with the other shoulder.”It will take more or less the same time and we will work in the same way to arrive at the Malaysia test as strong as possible.”The Spaniard underwent major surgery on his left shoulder immediately after last year’s Jerez test, due to frequent dislocations, and was still far from fully fit when testing began at Sepang two months later.Nonetheless, Marquez went onto dominate this season, with twelve wins and 18 podiums.Marquez will be the third MotoGP rider to undergo shoulder surgery since October, joining Takaaki Nakagami (LCR Honda) and Miguel Oliveira (Tech3 KTM).”4The 2020 Sepang test starts on February 7.
