Fabio Quartararo feels the assumption certain circuits play to the strengths of manufacturers in MotoGP isn’t a belief he holds having seen trends broken throughout the 2019 MotoGP campaign.While Yamaha has endured a tough time at Motegi in recent seasons, having not even featured on the podium at the Japanese MotoGP since 2015, Quartararo remains confident he can repeat his recent form by fighting at the front for Petronas Yamaha this weekend.Quartararo, who claimed victory in last year’s Moto2 race in Japan before being disqualified for a post-race technical infringement, sees Motegi has one of his favourite tracks on the race calendar and is duly relishing this weekend as he targets a maiden MotoGP race win in his rookie campaign.The French rider has dismissed the idea Yamaha could struggle at Motegi due to the track’s long straights, slow corners and multiple acceleration areas which theoretically would suit the likes of Honda and Ducati and neutralise Yamaha’s strengths in corner speeds.“I think this year a lot of times that I heard that the Yamaha was not going to go really well at some tracks, like Austria, but we managed to get on to the podium,” Quartararo said. “Honestly, now I don’t think about Yamaha or Honda tracks.“I need to be focused on this weekend as it is a track that I really love and we will make our best and work like we did during all races, step by step, and we’ve seen the forecast for Saturday which is raining so we need to learn the track really fast on this bike.”Quartararo is also eager to clinch the top MotoGP rookie title this weekend which he will achieve at the Japanese Grand Prix if he isn’t outscored by Suzuki’s Joan Mir by 10 points.“At the beginning of the year our goal was to be top rookie so we will try to achieve this goal this weekend but honestly I really haven’t thought about it,” he said. “We will try to make the best result as possible and try to be fast, consistent and fight with these guys.”Quartararo also leads the Independent riders’ standings by 24 points ahead of Pramac Ducati’s Jack Miller.
