Razlan Razali is to step down as CEO of the Sepang Circuit to focus on his role as team principal for Petronas Sepang Racing in the MotoGP, Moto2 and Moto3 World Championships.Razali – who has been fulfilling both roles until now – will be replaced as circuit CEO by Azhan Shafriman Hanif, a previous employee of Petronas.Appointed CEO on October 8, 2008, Razali has overseen a massive boost in crowd numbers at the Malaysian MotoGP, rising from just 50,000 in 2008 to over 170,000 (including sold-out race days) in recent seasons.Overall track usage now stands at 94% for the year.Sepang’s move into rider development programmes and team management was done as part of Razali’s plan to build home interest, culminating in Hafizh Syahrin becoming Malaysia’s first MotoGP rider in 2018 and the formation of the Petronas Yamaha MotoGP team in 2019.”By taking on the role of Team Principal of the Sepang Racing Team full-time, I will be able to focus 100% on my responsibilities,” Razali said. “I look forward to strengthening activation and engagement with Partners, attracting new companies to join us, improving the team’s function as a platform for Malaysians to compete in the MotoGP, and also strengthening the team’s corporate governance.”Being CEO of SIC was already living a dream; managing a World Championship team is even more amazing. I will not waste this opportunity to make Malaysia proud, to see Malaysians do well in our team and uplift the name of Malaysia around the world, flying the Jalur Gemilang high as ambassadors for Malaysia in two-wheel motor racing.”I wish SIC and the new CEO great success. The Board of Directors has chosen someone capable and passionate, and well-versed in the ins and outs of the motorsport world. Together with the team, I am confident that the new CEO will take the circuit to greater heights, building upon what we have achieved these past years.”After a stunning debut season with Fabio Quartararo, the Sepang team has its sights set on MotoGP wins and a potential championship challenge in 2020… once racing begins following the coronavirus disruption.A title challenge is also on the cards in Moto3, where John McPhee took the Sepang’s first grand prix victory last season, while the Moto2 squad has expanded to a double rider line-up this year.
