Remy Gardner has confirmed rumours that he was approached by KTM about a MotoGP ride in 2020.The Australian, son of 500cc world champion Wayne Gardner, has taken his first podium and pole position in Moto2 this season but felt he isn’t yet ready for the premier-class.”This was back after I had a decent race in Austria until I got taken out… My manager just said he was expecting a call from KTM and what were my thoughts?” Gardner told the official MotoGP website.”I thought I would like to continue in Moto2 for one more year. I said I like fighting at the front, when we’re there. I had a two-year contract with these [SAG] guys. I’m happy with the team. I want one more year’s experience and I thought it’s probably better to stay here at the moment.”Gardner said he didn’t know if the interest was for the factory KTM team, which needs a rider in place of Johann Zarco, or the satellite Tech3 squad: “They just showed some interest. It never got that far.”The 21-year-old, who previously raced for Tech3 in Moto2 when the team used its own chassis, emphasised that his long-term goal remains MotoGP, but feels he needs to prove himself first.”Obviously it depends on how everything goes here, but personally I think I’d ride a MotoGP bike probably better than a Moto2 bike,” he said. “I’m a big guy, heavy guy and every time I’ve jumped on a bigger bike it just seems to get a bit easier for me.”[MotoGP’s] obviously the goal for all riders but we need to do some hard work here first, really show our potential and get the results.”Gardner, who was injured at Jerez, is currently twelfth in the world championship and on course for his best season in grand prix.
