Leclerc starts from pole for the first time since last year’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix after beating reigning world champion Verstappen by 0.123s in qualifying on Saturday evening.

Ferrari teammate Carlos Sainz will go from third and shares the second row with Sergio Perez’s Red Bull.

After ending up nearly 0.7s off pole, Lewis Hamilton starts fifth in the highest-placed Mercedes. The seven-time world champion will be joined on the third row by former Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas, who was one of the stars of qualifying for Alfa Romeo.

Kevin Magnussen produced a stunning lap to put his Haas seventh on the grid, ahead of Fernando Alonso’s Alpine.

New Mercedes driver George Russell could only take ninth after making an error at Turn 1 on his only Q3 lap on fresh softs.

Pierre Gasly completes the top 10 for AlphaTauri. Meanwhile, propping up the back of the grid is Williams driver Nicholas Latifi.

The opening round of the 2022 F1 season gets underway at 6pm local time (3pm GMT).
