Second-year Moto2 rider Tony Arbolino claims to be ‘very motivated’ ahead of his first season with perennial championship contenders Elf Marc VDS.

Following a solid rookie season with Dynavolt IntactGP in 2021, Arbolino was signed to replace Augusto Fernandez, who in turn replaces fellow Spaniard and 2022 MotoGP rookie Raul Fernandez.

It’s a move that should provide the young Italian with a consistent chance of fighting for podiums, if not wins as Elf Marc VDS have won races in each of the last three seasons, including the 2019 world title with Alex Marquez.

With his more experienced team-mate Sam Lowes currently nursing a tendinitis issue in his left wrist, the first couple of races could see Arbolino in a position to lead the team’s podium charge, something he aims to do a lot of throughout the season.

Speaking ahead of next weekend’s season opener in Qatar, Arbolino added: “I am very motivated and eager to start the season in Qatar. I came to this team wanting to give my all and repay the trust placed in me, so I have worked very hard during the pre-season.

“During the winter we have been growing our relationship together. We understand each other very well, there is good harmony both when it comes to work and when it comes to disconnecting.

“We have created a good group and that is very important for me! Testing has gone well and while we still need to polish a few details, we are ready to fight on the track.

“My main goal this season is to be very competitive in order to get podium positions and fight with the fastest in the category. Let no one doubt that I will give my all!”

During the recent three day Portimao test Arbolino finished 11th quickest – +1.066s down on current Moto3 world champion Pedro Acosta.
